Anger Management Strategies for Stressed Out Individuals at Work

You may as well face it, we all live in a world where stress is a constant factor in our lives. For some individuals, stress will start intruding into their lives even before leaving home to go to work or school. Just waking up to the people we live with can sometimes get our nerves in an uproar. The sad part is that if we leave home in a bad mood, usually it only gets worse as we face more situations such as traffic, gloomy Monday mornings or having to attend meetings all day. These are the days in which anger management strategies can really come in handy.

Unless you live in a fairy tale land, you are not going to have perfect days all week long. During those less than stellar days, it would behoove you to use a few anger management techniques which can help turn those sour moments around before they ruin your mood for the entire day. Having anger issues can be very detrimental to your workplace relationships, and could possibly cost you your job if you were to lash out at the wrong person, or if you made it a habit to lose your temper.

The first thing you need to do to control your anger is to identify it while you can still manage it. Too many times people do not realize they are going to lose their temper until it is too late. By recognizing the fact you are feeling frustrated, irritated or moody about a certain person or situation, can curb your feelings before they become a problem.

After you have realized the frustration or irritation is building inside you, it is time to diffuse the feelings. Take a few deep breaths, and put yourself in the shoes of the person who has triggered these feelings in you. When you think about the motivations of others, it is easy to empathize with their emotions and opinions. You may be able to control your anger more efficiently when you think about how the other person feels at the moment also. You may find the person who caused your anger had no ill will toward you, and just made an honest mistake. This can also prevent you from taking the situation too far. However, if you find it too difficult to empathize with the other person or think that individual has bad intentions or ill will towards you, then it’s time to seek external help. Either talk to HR or someone in your firm whom you respect and trust to help you navigate your relationship with this individual.

Many situations can be diffused simply by communicating more clearly. By taking the time to insure both you and the other parties involved know precisely what is happening, there will be fewer conflicts. If you are leading a project, give concise instructions and ask for any questions up front, then allow time for answers. Factor in that some people may need more time, direction and one on one communication before they are ready to complete the task, whereas others may be quicker to jump in with little or no direction, monitoring or over seeing.

Finally, always put your mind in gear before you let your actions do the driving. Take time to think things through, problem solve ahead of time, and take into account the different personalities and how best to approach them. That way, you will have less headaches in the long run. Everyone loses their cool every now and again; after all we are all human. So be sure to exercise a little compassion for yourself if you do lose it.
